The 5 C’s of Talent and Their Reflection in Hospitality and Accounting

You might be thinking, “Entreflow, aren’t you an accounting firm? What do you know about hospitality?”
Fair question. But that’s exactly where you’d be wrong.
At Entreflow, we consider ourselves part of the industry and it helps shape how we work with our clients and partners. Hospitality is about creating exceptional experiences, building meaningful relationships, and making people feel supported. Whether we’re helping clients understand their numbers or navigate business challenges, we’re in the business of people too.
And let’s be honest: in hospitality, standing still isn’t really an option. Trends change, guest expectations evolve, and what impressed someone yesterday is often considered the bare minimum today. The goal isn’t just to meet the bar; it’s to keep raising it (while somehow making it look effortless).
The 5 C’s of Talent give us a roadmap for recognizing and developing the qualities that help people thrive at work. And in hospitality, where every interaction matters, having the right talent isn’t just important…it’s everything.
Think of the 5 C’s as the all-star cast behind exceptional service, each bringing their own unique personality to the table. Let’s meet and take a closer look at each one.
Competence
Competence is the brain behind it all. It’s all about the skills, knowledge, and abilities someone brings to their role. It encompasses everything from technical expertise to soft skills. Ideally, they can master a new software platform without breaking into a cold sweat and still have the people skills to navigate a difficult conversation with a client or a co-worker.
Character
Character is where a person’s true colours show…and hopefully they’re not red flags. In hospitality, and especially in accounting, character matters just as much as technical skills. We’re entrusted with highly sensitive information, so integrity, honesty, and professionalism aren’t optional; they’re the foundation of every client relationship.
A big part of character is empathy. Not every client comes to us from the same place financially, and that’s okay. Our role isn’t to judge their situation or question how they got there. It’s to understand their goals, provide guidance, and help them move forward with confidence. Strong character builds trust, and trust is what turns a one-time client into a long-term relationship.
Commitment
Commitment is where good intentions become actions. It’s integrity in motion. When you say you’re going to do something, you do it. And if circumstances change and you can’t, you communicate, reset expectations, and recommit on new terms. That’s what accountability looks like.
Commitment is also about reliability. A dedicated team member doesn’t just meet deadlines, they take ownership, stay organized, and will often find ways to exceed expectations. When workloads pile up and the pressure is on, commitment is what separates those who look for the nearest exit from those who roll up their sleeves and get to work.
Let’s be honest, every job has busy seasons, and accounting is no exception. There will be days when your to-do list seems to have its own to-do list. But committed professionals don’t throw in the towel at the first sign of stress. They prioritize, communicate, adapt, and keep delivering exceptional service. As they say in theatre: the show must go on…and in accounting, so must the deadline.
Communication
Communication is truly an art form when it’s done effectively. In many ways, it’s the bridge that connects all of the 5 C’s. For us, effective communication starts from the very first conversation with a potential client to determine whether we’re the right fit for one another. That initial interaction sets the tone for the entire relationship.
From there, communication needs to continue through every step of the onboarding process and beyond. Otherwise, it’s like a bad game of telephone, messages get distorted, expectations get missed, and nobody ends up on the same page. We need to understand our clients’ goals, challenges, and needs, and likewise, our clients need to understand what we require from them so we can work together effectively.
And communication isn’t just about clients. Internally, clear and consistent communication is essential for keeping everyone aligned, informed, and moving in the same direction. Without it, collaboration becomes much harder, which brings us to our next star in the lineup:
Collaboration
Collaboration is the teamwork behind the scenes that keeps the client experience running smoothly. In hospitality, and especially in professional services, there are often many moving parts involved in delivering exceptional service. While you may be responsible for only one piece of the puzzle, your success depends on working in sync with the people around you.
Effective collaboration means sharing information, communicating openly, and supporting one another, regardless of title or role. It’s about recognizing that everyone is working toward the same goal: creating a positive experience for the client. When teams collaborate well, things happen efficiently, deadlines are met, and clients feel taken care of.
When collaboration breaks down, however, the cracks start to show. Information gets missed, tasks fall through the gaps, and the client experience can feel disjointed. More often than not, that leads to frustration, for both the team and the client.
The End Result
While not every team member will excel equally in all five of these qualities, it’s important to understand why each one is crucial to building a hospitality-focused team. Competence, Character, Commitment, Communication, and Collaboration work together to create exceptional client experiences and strong, lasting relationships.
By intentionally hiring for and developing these qualities within your team, you’ll create a culture where clients feel valued, supported, and confident in your service. And when that happens, outstanding service isn’t something you have to force, it’s simply the natural result.
