The Capital of the Northwest Territories, Yellowknife, which in the Dogrib language is spoken means ‘where the money is’ was established in 1934 after gold was found in the area, hence the name.
Things to do:
Snowking’s Winter Festival: This annual festival showcases an ice castle, tourists and locals can take tours of the construction and the finished product, and rent it out for events. Accompanied by music and food, it is a spectacle for everyone to see.
Prince of Wales Northern Heritage Center: Opened in 1979,this museum showcases artifacts from the Northwest Territories’ history.
Old Town: It advertises its raffish ‘dirty thirties’ where miners pitched tents and built shacks covering the entirety of the ‘Rock’ which at its highest point you get a 360 degree view of the city, nearby islands, and Great Slave Lake.
NWT Brewing Company: The northernmost brewery in Canada uses some of the purest water in the world for their brewing and it shows. Sip a beer while enjoying the Aurora Borealis at their brewpub The Woodhouse Brewhouse & Eatery.
The Wildcat Cafe: Opened in 1937, it is the oldest restaurant in Yellowknife still in the same log cabin as it was when it first opened.
The Book Cellar: Yellowknife is home to Canada’s most northern independent book store, opened in 1979.
